Midlertidig Hvidovre - Hvidovre imidlertid
Hvidovre, 2015
Temporary Hvidovre – Hvidovre in the meantime
A new town center was being planned for Hvidovre and it was decided that the site shouldn’t be desolated during the planning and construction. Several public art projects were created during that time.
One of them was Temporary Hvidovre – Hvidovre in the meantime, which was placed on a windy lawn near a busy road. The work included five benches placed in a semicircle in the grass surrounding a small, round space consisting of a concrete circle with a diameter of two meters. The work was constructed with collected, leftover building materials from the local residential area. The benches were built with these leftover materials: different types of stones, concrete and tiles, put together in a kind of patchwork in red, yellow, white and grey with various textures and patterns. The benches measured 40 x 100 x 50 cm, and together they resembled a small collection of houses. A selection of the collected materials was placed upon the concrete circle that functioned as jumping-on-stones-playground, representing the building materials, which we use to build: regular, mass produced bricks, concrete tiles, aerated concrete, but with some surprising variations and trends – a kind of building-DNA of Hvidovre.
According to the plan, the work was supposed to stay for three months, but since the construction of the new town center was delayed, the work ended up staying for three years. For a small fee, Camilla Nørgård returned several times to maintain the work. When it was taken down, a public finissage was held, and the locals were offered to take a piece of the work home.
